A simplistic way to explain a bloated gut is that it’s a feeling of having gas that has built up in the digestive system. It makes the stomach hard and protruding uncomfortably. Having a bloated gut is not a pleasant experience because of the accompanying discomfort. It isn’t confined to a certain age or gender since it’s a common occurrence among both young and old. There are several reasons why a person may have a bloated gut.
Here are five common gut bloating causes.
Nearly everyone has dealt with issues of indigestion at some point in their lives. This can be caused by eating habits or severe digestive complications. When one overeats or does not properly chew food, indigestion can occur. Consuming greasy, spicy, and fatty food can cause indigestion too. It’s also not advisable to lie down immediately after eating because that makes it much harder to digest food and increases the risk of abdominal discomfort. Diseases such as gastritis and stomach ulcer may also cause indigestion.
Dehydration is one of the most common gut bloating causes. It makes digestion difficult and results in electrolyte imbalance. It’s, therefore, advisable to drink sufficient amount of water throughout the day to prevent this from happening. The more water you drink, the less likely you are to suffer from a bloated gut.
3. Fluid Retention
There are instances when bodily fluids are stored around the pelvic area or abdomen, and this typically leads to bloating. When this happens, you’ll notice that some clothes become tighter and the stomach painful. Liver disease is a common cause of this and in some very rare cases, cancer.
4. Food allergies and sensitivities
In many cases, food sensitivities, allergies, and intolerance to certain types of products such as dairy, cause gut bloating. People who are lactose intolerant experience serious cases of bloated guts when they consume milk products. The same goes for those who are intolerant to gluten-containing foods such as bread, cereals, and pasta.
5. Gas and flatulence
Flatulence is the medical term used to refer to the process of releasing gas through the anus from the digestive tract. In common terms, it’s called passing wind or farting. This happens when gas accumulates inside the digestive system. If one fails to pass the wind, this gas will cause bloating in the gut.
Other common gut bloating causes
These include constipation, bowel obstruction, pregnancy, hookworm infection and premenstrual syndrome among others. Gut bloating causes great discomfort, but it can be avoided all the same by mitigating the causative factors.
